City Art Gallery, Plovdiv opens renovated “Icons” exposition

The icon hall of the City Art Gallery, Plovdiv in the Old Town opened doors with a fully renovated exposition.

The highlight are the oldest icons from the collection, which are also deemed to be the icons with the highest artistic value – eight festive icons from Nessebar – St. George on a throne from Plovdiv, a set of royal icons from the church of St Constantine and Helena (16th century) in Plovdiv. Icons from the 17th century are on display on either side – the royal gates from Gorni Voden and icons from Rakitovo. Besides the arrangement of the exhibits, the interior of the hall is also fully renovated.

There is an amply illustrated information section in the lobby, divided up into four principal themes – “Christian Plovdiv”, “Church art in Plovdiv and the region”, “Icon” and “Iconostasis”. The renovation of the permanent exposition was funded by the institution’s own revenues.

On 6 and 7 April admission to the icon gallery will be free.
